|I have to give this new generation credit – they really get it. Whether they’re wearing wacky suits or trying on their mom’s old prom dress, teens today aren’t afraid to have a little fun with fashion. And isn’t that what being young is all about? Here at TODAY Style, we salute them!
And fun doesn’t have to stop at 17 years old. At this year’s fashion prom (aka the Met Gala), celebrities went all out with avant-garde looks to match the theme honoring designer Rei Kawakubo. The Japanese designer behind fashion label Comme des Garcons never shies away from making a statement, and neither did the dresses on the red carpet. If I had to vote for king and queen of that prom, it would be Rihanna and her dress. Yes, they each deserve their own crown. (Though Serena Williams and her baby bump come close.)
When it comes to crowns, I’m rooting for Mikayla Holmgren to become the next Miss Minnesota USA. The 22-year-old dancer is hoping “to be a model to other young women with Down syndrome that they can do whatever they put their mind to,” as she told TODAY.
Her story and attitude are certainly award-worthy and in many ways, she’s already won.
