According to a study recently published in the journal Health Psychology, being lonely makes the effects of a cold seem even worse. When US scientists administered cold-inducing nasal drops to 159 volunteers aged 18 to 55 and quarantined them in hotel rooms for five days, those test subjects who felt lonely tended to report more severe symptoms than others who had stronger social networks.
